This is a normal concern--you don't want to be strung along with no end in sight. There is no minimum number of sessions you must commit to (i.e. no "contract"), and in our first session we will construct a plan together, including a target number of sessions. Once we have established your goal(s) and put them in priority order, I'll be able to give you an idea of how many sessions would be ideal.
This approach is different from how some counselors work. Some emphasize an open-ended process in which the client experiences therapy and life at the same time for as long as it takes to uncover and resolve the root issues. The old-style "analysis" associated with Freud is like this. This approach is not wrong, it's just not my way. I believe clients and I both benefit from more structure--we both know what we're focusing on and for how long. Things can certainly change along the way, but when we begin with a plan, we are both more efficient and progress is quicker.
